Melissa Patheria - CEO Kidzappy

Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/ entrepreneurship?

I started Kidzappy & Ambition in December 2012.  I use to baby sit kids in the UK during my university days. Upon graduation, I embarked on a Digital Marketing Career reaching a National Level Role at a big media house, however, this was not enough, there was something missing and thus I went on a sabbatical and quit my job in June 2012.

A couple of weeks after quitting, I heard a conversation between my sister-in-law and my niece, who is now 8 but at that time  she was just 3 years old. The conversation was about my sister in law having an appointment for getting her a manicure-pedicure done at the salon and my niece was insisting to tag along with her and get her nails painted. My sister in law was not to excited about this and was concerned about what my niece will do there. She kept saying to her "What will you do there, it will be boring and then I will have to attend to you or leave my work half done and get you back home"

This conversation inspired me to start a salon for kids, where the aim was to have them have fun and not get bored. They can get their services done themselves, or just play with toys & more, while the parents are getting their services done.  

So I guess it was my niece who inspired me :)

Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and
services here.

  • The salon has 3 business verticals, catering to toddlers , adults including excellent handling of older clients as the staff is use to handling kids with care and lastly we undertake SPA Party requirements also.

  • The in salon service range from haircuts, treatments, facials, Manicure-Pedicure, Waxing & More ( Please see our website or Facebook page for our full listing) 

  • As mentioned earlier our SPA Parties vertical is mainly for the kids age groups of 5 - 14 years.  Besides SPA Parties, we can offer activities and decor for other themed parties as well 

  • For Adults we are your occasions partner , and we offer Hair & Make Up services, plus just like birthday parties with our vast range of tie-up we can even take up the entire Wedding Planning

Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

Our biggest challenge which is an ongoing challenge is that we are located in the heart of Lokhandwala, and this it is the hub of salons and clients are spoilt for choice !! :).  And therefore this often leads to comparison in price usually especially in regards to services for the adults. 

Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

While we have been highly established in the kids segment, and currently crossing from growth to maturity.  There is still room for growth in the adult vertical and working on this with due diligence

But we soon realised that parents are looking for a hygenic place for their kids and when they find somewhere kids are comfortable, it automatically leads to them being comfortable with the place and many attempt to start their own services.

Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the
discovery period?

We have started many services, such as Nail Extension as we discovered that we have to be competitive and innovative, while providing services that cater to both the kids and adults

Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for next five years?

In the next 5 years, we aim to have at least 2-3 branches in Mumbai.

Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

My biggest advice to new entrepreneurs is that though we compare the current scenarios with what many have studied, like wait for 1000 days and then shut shop if you have not achieved your goals and acquired profit, that while that is true, its not always the case.

Sustaining a business starts with having the faith, that if you stick around, you will do wonders. So putting an effort each day, is extremely important and never give up on your business idea. Focus on making it a success down the line.
